Light for Bearded Dragon: A Guide to Choosing the Best Lighting System for Your Pet

Pets

Introduction

If you’re a beginner owner of a bearded dragon, one of the most important things to consider in their care is their lighting system. As a reptile, bearded dragons require UVB lighting to help them regulate their body temperature and maintain good health. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about choosing the best lighting system for your bearded dragon.

Why Does My Bearded Dragon Need UVB Lighting?

In the wild, bearded dragons get UVB lighting from the sun which is necessary for the production of vitamin D3 that allows them to properly absorb calcium, maintain healthy bones, and prevent metabolic bone disease. In captivity, you need a good UVB light to replicate the effects of the sun for their well-being.

What Factors Should I Consider When Choosing a Lighting System?

The Strength of the UVB Bulb

The strength of the UVB bulb that you choose for your bearded dragon depends on whether or not they’ll be able to get direct sunlight if you’ll be keeping them outdoors or if they’ll be living indoors entirely. If your pet will be outdoors a lot, you can choose a bulb in the 5.0 to 6.0 range. If your pet will be indoors most of the time, you will need a bulb in the 10.0 range to compensate for the lack of natural sunlight. Additionally, lights can weaken over time and so you’ll also have to replace them at regular intervals.

The Size of the Enclosure

Bearded dragons require a lot of space to move around, as they are active creatures, so you need to get a lighting system that fits your pet’s enclosure. Typically, the UVB bulb should cover at least 2/3rds of the cage or a minimum of 2/3rds of the length of the enclosure.

The Type of UVB Bulbs

There are different types of UVB bulbs but the most common ones are fluorescent, compact fluorescent and mercury vapor bulbs. Fluorescent lights can be mounted inside or outside the tank, whereas the other two types should be placed inside the tank. Mercury vapor bulbs emit higher levels of UVB and heat than fluorescent bulbs and can save you money in the long run. However, they also need to be carefully monitored to prevent your bearded dragon from getting too much heat or UVB, which can lead to health problems.

What Other Lighting Systems Does My Bearded Dragon Need?

Basking Lights

Apart from UVB, bearded dragons also require a source of heat to help them regulate their body temperature. You can provide this heat through basking lights, which provide a focused and intense heat source to mimic the sun. Basking lights should be positioned in such a way that they are close to the basking spot, but not too close as this could cause overheating or burns. Temperature lamps come in different colours and intensities, with red being the least intense and white being the brightest.

Nighttime Lighting

At night, your bearded dragon needs a break from light and can be seen to allow them to have an optimal rest. Red or black heat bulbs can be used for nighttime heat that doesn’t disturb your bearded dragon’s circadian rhythm.

In Conclusion

Investing in a good lighting system for your bearded dragon is crucial to their health and well-being. When choosing a UVB bulb, make sure you consider factors such as the strength of the bulb, the size of the enclosure, and the type of UVB bulb. Always read the instructions on the bulb packaging and monitor your pet’s behaviour to ensure they’re healthy and happy. With the right lighting system in place, your bearded dragon will thrive and be a happy and healthy companion.
